Fishing rods and golf
clubs are a lot alike. They are task specific tools designed for the
enjoyment of the user. There is no one all-around club or rod.
Differentiation necessitates specialization. (getting kinda deep?)
The
requirements imposed by the fishing method, species sought, reel design
& size, line weight, and lure or bait used, dictate that a large number
of variations exist. Next, throw into the recipe, preference in blanks,
guides, handles, colors, and thread design, and you have the ingredients
for a custom rod. At this point, the artisan (or craftsman if you
prefer) assumes the responsibility for creating something truly
special.
There are
principles of construction regarding guide alignment, spacing, size, and
number, that affect the rod's performance. These principles will not
be compromised. Anything that restricts the designed characteristics of
the blank, negatively impacts its stress bearing capabilities.
Therefore, guide wraps, handles, and decorative thread work are kept as
small as possible (your light tackle rod will not be a three foot rod on
a four foot handle, but your stand-up rod will pull stumps if required).
Important details such as dressing the guide feet, proper thread
tensioning, and careful finish application, all affect the rod's
durability. Several different finishes may be employed, depending on
strength and aesthetic requirements (the same with adhesives). Once the
construction phase is completed, the decorative process takes over.

Decorative threadwork is how every builder "signs" his work.
Each should be unique. As a result, I no longer do geometric designs (though admittedly,
the variations are practically endless). The art should be concentrated to avoid the above
mentioned dead spots. I've taken my wife's adage that "simple is elegant",
to heart. That is why I weave, and I hope you'll agree.
There are only a handful of artisans worldwide that can create a full
color weave at this level of intricacy. I make my own patterns, and have over 100
patterns for different species and "poses". I can create logos or your personal
designs in thread. There are some limitations imposed by my media, but most can be
modified.

"I hope you enjoy reviewing some of my work and thank you for sticking with me through this
discourse."
Sincerely,
